In 1864 Texas, as the Civil War ravages the nation, on the outskirts of the conflict it’s business as usual for slave owners and traders. The Retrieval is the story of 13-year-old Will (Ashton Sanders), who works with his uncle Marcus (Keston John) under threat of death from a white bounty hunter Burrell (Bill Oberst Jr.). The pair gain the trust of runaway slaves, then turn them in to Burrell.

On a dangerous mission into the free North to find Nate (Tishuan Scott), a fugitive freedman, things go badly. Will and Nate find themselves on the run together. As the bond between them unexpectedly grows, Will is consumed by conflicting emotions as he faces a gut-wrenching choice: turn Nate in, ensuring the older man’s death, or help him and get killed himself.

Didn’t think another film set in the slavery era would be made so soon after 12 YEARS A SLAVE, but this does look pretty interesting.

It is a gem of a film. Pre-production began in 2010, not sure which movie was filmed first.
