If anyone can completely and totally embody a depressed former Riot Grrl, and do her own singing as well, it’s Juliette Lewis. In Jen McGowan’s new film Kelly and Cal, she perfectly embodies Kelly, a housewife and new mom trapped in the suburbia you can tell she never wanted. She’s got a squalling baby, a checked-out husband (Josh Hopkins), and semi-psychotic mother-in-law (Cybill Shepherd). Sneaking a cigarette by the back fence one day, she meets her teenaged neighbor Cal (Jonny Weston), who uses a wheelchair due to a recent injury. They soon discover that they are both grieving the loss of their former lives. Of course things get complicated, but the performances elevate this out of Lifetime Movie territory and into something “so dramatically and emotionally authentic that it makes you feel as though you’re using some special kind of magic to peer right into the lives of real people” (Film Racket).
