We Came as Romans, the post-hardcore band from Troy, Michigan, has honed its fiercely powerful sound through relentless touring over the course of its ten-year career. Present, Future, and Past captures the six-piece band — vocalists Dave Stephens and Kyle Pavone, guitarists Joshua Moore and Lou Cotton, bassist Andy Glass and drummer Eric Choi — performing at Chicago’s House of Blues in support of their 2013 album ‘Tracing Back Roots.” Our screening will include a live Q&A with members of the band.
Director Russ Hubley utilizes multiple cameras, brisk editing and lots of shots of band-audience interaction throughout the fourteen-song set, and the sound mix is definitely loud, but clear. The two lead vocalists have intriguingly different styles, with Stephens’s full-throated scream providing quite the contrast to Pavone, who sings far more melodically. The guys have a sufficiently intense energy level on stage, and also have a friendly, unmistakably Midwestern rapport with their devoted audience. There’s no behind-the-scenes interviews with band members, but fans will be more than happy with the high quality production values of a concert film that lets the music do the talking.
