In The Road Within, Vincent (Robert Sheehan), a young man who suffers from Tourette’s Syndrome, is suddenly forced into the world when his mother passes away. Vincent’s absentee father (Robert Patrick) is a politician who sends his son away to a center for those dealing with similar psychological disorders. There, center director Dr. Rose (Kyra Sedgwick) assigns Vincent a roommate, Alex (Dev Patel). The latter is anything but pleased to share his space, which is kept in perfect order due to his obsessive-compulsive disorder. Feeling more alone than ever, Vincent finds a friend in Marie (Zoë Kravitz), who is a repeat guest at the center because of her anorexia.
Vincent and Marie decide to escape the center, stealing Dr. Rose’s car so they can drive to the ocean to scatter his mother’s ashes. But nothing is straightforward for them — as they are about to set out, Alex stops the pair, and soon finds himself a backseat passenger on a life-changing three-day journey.
With Dr. Rose and Vincent’s father in pursuit, the three find they’re perfectly capable of living their lives according to their own rules, while breaking some others along the way. For this coming-of-age road comedy in the vein of Little Miss Sunshine, writer/actress/first-time director Gren Wells has adapted the German feature Vincent will Meer (Vincent Wants to Sea). The result, The Road Within, brings humor and poignancy to the story of three young adults searching for their own version of life.
