The Parker family, Catherine (Nicole Kidman), Matthew (Joseph Fiennes), and their two teenage children, Lily (Maddison Brown) and Tommy (Nicholas Hamilton), have just moved from Sydney to a small town in the Australian outback. When Lily and Tommy suddenly vanish in a dust storm, the locals join the search lead by police officer David Rae (Hugo Weaving). With temperatures rising and the chances of survival plummeting with each passing day, it soon becomes apparent that something terrible may have happened to the kids. Suspicions abound, rumors spread and ancient Aboriginal stories are told in whispers, as the locals begin to turn against the parents. Catherine and Matthew find themselves pushed to the brink, as they struggle with the uncertainty of their children’s disappearance and their growing mistrust of each other.
