Join us Monday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m. for a supremely cool celebration of Detroit uniqueness! We are pleased to present Detroit’s own Robert St. Mary and Jerry Vile, who will be signing copies of The Orbit Magazine Anthology, St. Mary’s new book chronicling Vile’s print contributions to our City.
The Orbit Magazine Anthology is an archaeological dive into Detroit’s alt-publishing history with a focus on the three magazines published by Jerry Peterson and his band of punk-infused creative types. Better known as Jerry Vile, Peterson was the ringleader who brought together creative misfits from the Detroit area to create three key publications: White Noise, Fun: The Magazine for Swinging Intelectuals [sic], and Orbit (1990-1999).
The centerpiece of the evening will be our screening of a rare TV appearance by Vile himself, an episode of PBS’ American Playhouse titled “Who Am I This Time?” followed by a Q & A with Vile, led by St. Mary. Based on a short story by Kurt Vonnegut and directed by Academy Award-winner Jonathan Demme, “Who Am I This Time?” stars Christopher Walken, Susan Sarandon… and Jerry Vile. How awesome is that? Be sure and stick around after the show for what is sure to be a fascinating discussion.
