We are proudly presenting the brilliant new digital restoration of Orson Welles’ The Lady from Shanghai, beginning Friday, May 2 (check back for showtimes). Orson Welles’ iconic film noir classic — about an Irish sailor (Welles) caught up in dangerous web of intrigue with a beautiful woman (Rita Hayworth) and her sinister husband (Everett Sloane) — has never looked so great.
The restoration was assembled from 4K scans of the original nitrate negative, under the supervision of Sony’s aptly-named Grover Crisp, whose team has also completed restorations of Lawrence of Arabia, Taxi Driver, Picnic and On the Waterfront, among others.

“For Grover Crisp, the executive vice-president of film restoration at Sony, the rerelease is the result of more than two decades of work. The camera negative for The Lady from Shanghai was in such a poor state that it was only thanks to recent developments in digital technology that they could successfully restore it.” — Welcoming Welles’s Lady from Shanghai to London – at last – The Guardian
“Central to the appeal of the film is the sensation of unease, of anxiety and dread, it so effortlessly conjures. Indeed, it suggests noir’s extreme: convolution pushed into abstraction, a plot so sinister it is impossible to comprehend.” – Calum Marsh, Village Voice
